Music for a Saturday Lunchtime

Staines Salvation Army

January 2024
After 19 years and 77 recitals at St. Mary’s Parish Church Slough, I continued with a series of 4 Euphonium Recitals at St. Hilda’s Church, Ashford, Middx.
These were followed in July of 2023 with a new series at Staines Salvation Army in Ashford with Gareth Green at the piano and a selection of guests.

Gareth Green
With a Salvation Army brass band background, Yorkshire-born Gareth started learning the cornet and piano at the age of seven and went on to study music at Royal Holloway College in Egham,
specialising in performance, arranging and conducting, graduating in 1982 with a B.mus (Hons.) degree.
Later, at the National Centre for Orchestral Studies in Greenwich, he studied composition with Edward Gregson.
The Summer of 1983 found him spending six weeks touring Italy as associate Principal Trumpet with the Orchestra Internazionalles Jeunesses Musicales.
Returning to Egham in 1985 he became Assistant Musical Director of the Egham Band, which led to his appointment as Musical Director six years later.
At the same time, he began associations with several local Amateur Operatic Societies, both as orchestral player, and later as Musical Director,
a position which often involves filling in on the piano for rehearsals!
Gareth is also the resident accompanist for the Spelthorne Young Voices choir.

The Richard Scholar Recital Series

September 2023
After 19 years and 77 recitals at St. Mary’s Parish Church Slough, I continued my series of Euphonium Recitals
at St. Hilda’s Church, Ashford, Middx.

Titled The Richard Scholar Recital Series the concerts were a tribute to my very first brass teacher at Longford School
and had the blessing of Marion Scholar and the family.

Gareth Green was at the piano and Sue Brighton also featured playing the Baritone.

Many of the solo items were played on vintage & historic Euphoniums from my collection, dating back to 1891.
The concerts lasted for around 45 minutes with refreshments served afterwards.
Admission was £5 at the door.

Richard Scholar (1933-2018)

Richard was born into a musical family in Grampound, Cornwall where every village had its brass band. His grandfather, father and four uncles all played in the village band in the 1920s
and even formed the Scholar Band playing carols around the village on Christmas mornings.
Richard learnt to play at an early age and continued playing until he was no longer well enough to do so.
He joined the teaching staff of Longford School, Feltham in 1957 and studied arranging and conducting at the London Guildhall School of Music and played Euphonium,
and later Tenor Horn, with Egham, Staines and Staines Lammas Bands. On the many occasions he returned to Cornwall he rehearsed and played with the Camborne Band who were the
West of England Champions on many occasions.
He even took his Euphonium on honeymoon with him! (Marion Scholar)

Richard Scholar was my Form Master in my 1st. year at Longford School and already had a successful school brass band of which the school was very proud.
At that time, it was an all boys school, becoming a comprehensive 3 years later. Our earliest brass lessons were inspirational, with the full band rehearsing every lunchtime and
quartet practices after school.
In addition, we would regularly play in morning assemblies and feature in the school plays and concerts, as well as many
local music festivals. Later he engaged Gilbert Hall as a visiting peripatetic teacher enabling us to have time off from other lessons
(which we skilfully arranged to miss Maths or PE!) for private practice.
We were also taken to many band contests to hear some of the best brass bands, always armed with a score, with questions on the performances afterwards.
We were given the complete package to enable us to be (in his words) a true bandsman.
I hope these recital concerts were a fitting tribute. (Charley Brighton)
